The idea is to allow you to create or curate lists of Twitter accounts enabling you to build segmented Timelines yourself. So a good way to organise those you are following and viewing other people’s lists is a great way to discover new people who share your interests.
You could create a list of the funniest Twitter accounts, friends, bloggers, news, politics or any compilation that makes sense. Then you can view just the Tweets from those listed so simplifying your personal Timeline.
Lists are public by default - but can be made private. The lists you create are linked from your profile. Other Twitter users can then subscribe to your lists. This means lists have the potential to be an important new discovery mechanism for great tweets and accounts.
- To create a list: go to your Twitter page there is now a section on the right-hand sidebar called “Lists.” Click “New List”, give it a title and then select accounts to follow.
- To view the Listed Timelines: on the right-hand sidebar under “Lists” will be your personal lists – click on the relevant one to see that Timeline.
- To add people to a list: browse through the list of people you follow or you can just visit their profiles one-by-one and add them to the list of your choice, using a new “Lists” pull-down that appears in user profiles.
- To know what lists include you: next to your Follower and Following count is a “Lists” count, replacing what used to be your “Tweets” count (which has been made smaller and bumped up above these three numbers). Click on this number and you’ll get a page showing the lists that follow you and the lists that you are following.
- To Follow someone else's list: once you have found another list you would like to follow, open it and you will find a "Follow this list" button on the top left of the page just under the page title.
